The Thompson family will soon be getting a new garage door — but until the new door comes, their older one will showcase a piece of Canadian art history.

“We have a garage door that was busted, so I figured we should do something for the summer,” says Anna Thompson.

That something is a paint-by-numbers version of West Wind, a painting by famed Canadian artist Tom Thomson. The original painting, which depicts a tree amid rocks and water, was Thomson’s final work before his sudden death in 1917.

The Thompsons and their neighbours spent Canada Day putting the artistic touch to the garage door on Westhill Road. The neighbourhood also held a block party to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation.

Thompson says the work of art will stay up until the garage door is replaced.

“Hopefully before Christmas,” Anna says.
