Canada Day 2022

Canada Day 2021 - description Canada Day 2020 - post event review

Canada Day 2022

We are almost there. Lots of work still to be done but things are shaping up.

After two years absence, the barbeque/potluck is back. The burgers and hotdogs have already been purchased.

The fireworks are a go this year and we think they are going to be better than ever. As always, they are all consumer/residential approved but we spend extra money to make sure we get the best bang for the buck and it shows in the results.

Before the actual fireworks, as it is starting to get dark we have lots of sparklers and glowsticks for the kids.

We are still short of the amount of money committed to make this a success but the organizers have chipped in to make the event a success.

If you were thinking about donating, donations are still being accepted.

This year as always, the house decorating contest is shaping up to have some fierce competition. Please let the organizers know if you are interested in entering so we can make sure we give your house a judging.

The golf tournament is looking to be a success. The cutoff for entering is Wednesday June 29th. After that you can still be added to the stand by list but we cannot guarantee a tee time for you.

Make sure the kids in your house get their sidewalk chalk out and put on their best form for art. The judges will be around in the afternoon to render their verdict.

For the barbeque, it will be held at the lower end of Westhill.

Anticipating another hot day, it has more shade than the rest of the street, we have arranged with a couple of the houses their and they have made their barbeque available to us.

Since it is looking like the weather is going to be hot, we will have the water feature running again for the kids but this time it will be downhill from where people are sitting and not uphill. We learned our lesson on that one as the water tended to overshoot the active play zone.

Canada Day 2021

We are Almost There.

This year as always will be an event to remember and 20 years from now when your kids are talking to their friends about Canada Day and their friends talk about what a drag it was - you kids aren't even going to remember Covid Canada Day. They will ask you - "mom, dad - when was that covid Canada day thing my friends are talking  - all I remember is fun and those funny years where we all wore a mask while watching the fireworks".

Once again this year there will be no bbq this year and the covid themed Pinata is going to have to be deferred to next year but, a full slate of covid safe events are going to be held with the fireworks as the finale.

The golf tournament as always is a must and this year it was a roaring success for everybody who participated. Congratualations to Henry who was the winner with a score of just 4 over par. The house decorating contest is on and the judging will occur today between 2:00 and 3:00 pm. so if you haven't already, there is still time to decorate your house and since it is covid this is your opportunity to go full Griswalds on it.

Golf

The golf tournament is complete and all spots were taken. Sign up early next year if you are interested. Don't be disappointed.

Scavenger Hunt

The scavenger hunt is a go and is on now - click this link and print for the clues https://whv.c2pal.com/16-scavenger-hunt. The link is active. If you can't access the link or you can't print the page, come visit Angela and Greg Allt's house at 24 Westhill Rd and pick up a paper copy. If they are not home there is a red cloth bag hanging from the mailbox with the booklets inside.

Don't forget to grab a picture of your worst covid hair style. Don't be shy we are all the same boat and this is your chance to let  your hair down and win a prize at the same time.

The kids can bring out the inner artist in them and go crazy on with their sidewalk chalk art. Last year the competition was so fierce and the caliber and quality or art produced was so high the judges had an extremely hard time picking a winner.

With the inclusion of residents of Penni Place and Carey Cres this year, the competition is bound to be even higher.

So folks, get your kids to get out there and chalk the streets fantastic. It is my understanding, the judges had such a tough time picking a winner last year that everybody who entered received a prize.

Of course there will be prizes, and prizes and prizes galore.

Volunteer Opportunitites

As always volunteers are needed and welcome. One thing that is always missed is photographs. If somebody would like eto step up as the official photographer and capture this years event that would be great.

We also need people to stick around after and help clean up plus during the actual event people to help organize the seating, help with the sparklers for the kids etc.

Donations

If you are interested in donating, there are a few options available to you. You can make electronic donation online by sending a etransfer to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. No password is required and it will be automatically deposited.

Another way you can donate is to drop off a donation to Angela at 24 Westhill Rd.

Finally, residents of Westhill Rd will remember the donations canvassers from years past. Our new invites on Carey Cres and Penni Place will soon be greeted by a knock on the door by somebody from our committee collecting money for the Canada Celebration.

All the money collected (and more) goes into the celebration. Usually it is to cover the cost of the Fireworks, Barbeque and the Prizes but last year it all went into the Fireworks and prizes (most went to the fireworks and a lot of prizes were donated). Hopefully we can resume the BBQ and potluck next year.

It is important to get as much money in advance as possible. The fireworks, sparklers, prizes are ordered in advance and, to account for later donations the fireworks are over ordered anticipating more money coming in for them (which means this always turns into a loss leader event).

In addition to fireworks and sparklers this year as a special surprise 300 glow sticks and attachments have already been ordered and payed for as well as some of the harder to acquire fireworks (the bigger boomers that get sold out quickly and are manufactured in smaller quantities).

All households are welcome to join in the celebration regardless of donation and donations can be made up to and past the date of the event. More money is spent on the event that is collected.

Canada Day 2020

First published July 2020

This year, the Canada Day celebration continued and was a roaring success for all who attended. Since there was no barbeque this year the money that would ordinarily go that was funnelled into fireworks. In addition, since the games and contests were scaled down, the fewer contests had bigger prizes and again, the extra money left over was pushed into the fireworks.

The difference showed in the fireworks display. For those who didn't hear it, we received a shout out during the display from the residents of Carey Cres who obviously organized a shout out and yelled in unison "Carey Crescent Thanks you Westhill Rd."
